TIME MANAGEMENT AND IT'S IMPORTANCE IN ONLINE MARKETING

As an experienced manager in the military, government service and private business I have discovered some fairly basic rules which if followed go a long way toward assuring success in whatever management tasks you may be facing.

One of the most important rules is that of proper time management. There are only so many hours in each day available to you, for accomplishing the myriad of tasks involved in daily living. The time available to you for actually managing a business, any business, is probably your most precious personal resource.

Yes, time is a resource and like money and material must be carefully used for best effect. Now what are the basic keys to effective time management? Well, first of all you have the need to plan and organize your activities. Everyone knows that they must plan their activities in order to know what must be done to accomplish their objective or goal. One of the major results of planning, is organizing your resources (time, money, tools, communications, and others), allowing you to actually manage these resources to best effect.

How does one organize their time? Well, it is really very simple in theory but somewhat more difficult in execution. Why is this you may ask? Basically, it is a matter of priorities you must establish for the tasks you know must be accomplished to meet your requirements. We all know that accomplishing tasks is in reality a sequence of events, which if accomplished properly, lead to a desired result. And, we all know how other matters can intrude upon the process and mess up our best laid plans or procedures. What we must include in our time management process is discipline. An important step in time management is sticking to your plan. Don't let outside influences deter you from your course of action. Bear in mind, I did not say ignore this outside influence, I said do not let it deter you from your schedule.

Ah yes, your schedule. How important that little word schedule really is. A plan on how you use your time is called a schedule. To build a proper schedule, you need to know not only what must be done, but also, how much time it takes to do it. How do we find this out, and how much time is really involved? Well, you must do the task a sufficient number of times to learn how long it takes to properly accomplish it. This is a part of your planning and you must experiment to actually discover the time it takes to do something. Once you have done this and are satisfied the tasks are necessary to your business, you may tie them together in a timed sequence --- the result of which is a schedule for that particular task.

After you have gone through this process and have learned the actual time required to accomplish all your required tasks on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, you may then establish your working schedule. You have now accomplished the first important step in effective time management.

Now let's talk a minute about time wasters. Time wasters are those things that come up that you must accomplish, but are in reality nonproductive activities towards accomplishing your goals, whatever they may be. If your goal is marketing and selling services or products, a time waster is anything that does not directly support that activity. This being the case, you must look for efficient ways to handle these time wasters and not detract from the productive time available to you. A case in point is the tedious administrative tasks relating to the gathering, storing and retrieval of information you need to support your business activities. Samples of this type information could be the names and contact information for clients, vendors, suppliers, etc.

We know such information is very valuable to you, but the time it takes to record and retrieve all of this is a time consuming process and time better spent in marketing and promoting your service or products. So what we need to do is develop or find systems or methods to help us to do this sort of thing. Preferably, systems or methods consuming as little time as possible. Now add to this the requirement to record your work schedule, maintain a calendar, identify expense items and other administrative tasks, you can see the importance of having a handy system available.

In my many years of experience I have developed such systems, had assistants and secretaries available to do these things, and have taken time out of my personal work schedule to do some of it myself. Recently I have come across a system that has drastically improved my own time management. One which is simple in concept, inexpensive and very effective. How To Create An Ezine Directory

Ezinelocater.com a brand new site, was officially launched on 14 February 2001. I listed my ezine with this site on February 17, 2001 and Jeff gave me such great service I just had to meet the man behind http://www.ezinelocater.com

I did an ad hoc interview with the owner, Jeff Wilson. Here is an overview that interview:

Listen, Jeff, I'd like you to tell my readers how you came up with the idea for your site?

Jeff:
Having been online since 1995 and subscribing to over 100 Internet Marketing ezines I kept reading how targeted ezine advertising provided the best bang for your internet advertising dollars.

Several months ago I was searching for ezines to advertise one of my affiliate programs. After searching through more than 50 directories I still found it very difficult and time consuming to find the exact information I was looking for.

Larry:
In essence you were getting frustrated . . .Then what happened?

Jeff:
Well, that's when the light bulb came on. I figured, Why not build my own directory and build it so it is a win win situation for everyone. Now, this meant I had to wear at least three different hats:

Larry:
I don't quite understand -- What's behind this "3 hats" bit?

Jeff:
Let me explain. I put myself in differing situations. First I was a Free Information Seeker (Hat 1), Secondly I thought of myself as an advertiser (Hat 2) and finally I visualized being an ePublisher (Hat 3).

Larry:
I see . . . But wasn't that a bit difficult?

Jeff:
Not really, let me illustrate:

A. My First Hat: - Free Information Seeker/Subscriber

    1. Navigation had to be easy and fast from anywhere in the world.
    2. I would want to know immediately if the site is updated regularly.
    3. Free access to information (no membership fees).
    4. It must be easy to find ezines on my favorite topics.
    5. It's got to be easy to subscribe to selected ezines.
    6. It must be easy to UNsubscribe from selected ezines.
    7. I want to see as many details as possible about the ezine in a quick & easy-to-read format before I subscribe.

B. My Second Hat: - The Advertiser

    1. I must be able to quickly find specific types of ezine advertising.
2. I want to know how many subscribers and how often published at a glance.
3. I want to see the ad prices of specific types of ads at a glance.
4. I want to have free access to complete advertising details.
5. I want to be able to select a targeted topic and a specific type of advertising and see the results immediately

B. My Third Hat: - The ePublisher

1. I want an inexpensive way to advertise my ezine.
2. I want to continuously grow my list with people who want the type of content I am offering.
3. I want to increase the chances of selling all my ads each issue.

Larry:
It certainly looks like you put a tremendous amount of work into your site. Could you provide my readers with some benefits of listing their ezine(s) with your site?

Jeff:
I like to think Ezinelocater.com provides a solution for everyone no matter which hat you're wearing.

As an ezine publisher you know the gold is in your list. In order to build your list you must advertise. You must take advantage of every opportunity available. I am certainly bias but I believe the most targeted advertising available to an Ezine Publisher is an Ezine Directory.

I almost hate to mention these here because of the time it takes to build these attractive listings.
